Yuri Deigin’s Article “Lab-Made? SARS-Cov-2…” forgets 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan

Deigin’s article is illuminating. How chimeric viruses have been created, how they have escaped from the labs, whether their artificial creation can be detected. It is a must-read for everyone who discusses about the possible origins of the present coronavirus pandemic.

However, Deigin seems to keep in mind only Wuhan bio lab (or some other Chinese bio lab) and forgets 2019 Wuhan Military Games as one possible source of the epidemic.

Differently from some high-qualified experts, Deigin is logically exact. He asserts neither that the virus has been manipulated in the lab, nor that it has escaped from the lab. He claims, however, that it is difficult, if not impossible to prove or refute any of these hypotheses, at least without obtaining some additional conclusive evidence.

Some quotations from Deigin:

Virologists experimented with chimeric coronaviruses long before that. Here, for example, is a 1999 paper from the Dutch group of Peter Rottier from Utrecht University…

So Dr. Baric has been creating mutant viruses for over 30 years.

Maybe by 2019 the creation and testing of potential vaccines against various SARS-like coronaviruses was already in full swing.

First and foremost, lab leaks of the first SARS-CoV: initially, in the summer of 2003 in Singapore, then in December 2003 in Taiwan, and in the spring of 2004 twice in Beijing.

For example, a French lab once lost vials with SARS…

Am I then saying this is what happened? Of course not, I do not claim to know what happened. Today, there is no evidence of this.

Basically, a good genetic engineer can create a synthetic virus that would be indistinguishable from a natural one.

But sometimes traces of manipulation may remain…

Virologists have been doing things like this for 20 years, and modern genetic engineering tools make such manipulations accessible even to a grad student.

Again, I am not claiming with certainty that is what is happening here. All I am saying is that this is what could have happened, and we need a lot more evidence before we can reach a definitive conclusion.

…the lab-made CoV2 hypothesis. In my opinion, the data I have presented, taken together, do not allow us to reject this possibility.

Let me be clear: this does NOT prove that CoV2 was synthesized in the laboratory. Yes, as we have seen above, from a technical standpoint, it would not be difficult for a modern virologist to create such a strain. But there is no direct evidence that anyone did this…

… the inverse hypothesis about the exclusively natural origin of the virus does not yet have strong evidence either.
